Macedon Racing is delighted to introduce highly talented young horsewomen SARA RYAN as our head trainer from September 2026.

31 years of age, Sara has quickly established herself as one of the most talented young trainers in Australia in recent years.

Her rise through Australian racing has been as fast as it has been unconventional.

Originally studying biochemical engineering, Sara made the bold decision to leave university behind and dedicate herself to horses full-time. With no background in racing, Sara worked her way from the ground up to become head trainer at Domeland, where she delivered over 50 race wins and nearly $6.5 million in prizemoney.

Previously training primarily from the private training facility of former employer Domeland on the New South Wales Central Coast, Sara has demonstrated her extensive skills as an impressive young trainer both in and out of the saddle.

Sara shot to prominence as a fledgling trainer by quickly scooping Randwick feature wins in both the $3m Big Dance and the $1m Provincial Championship.

Her breakthrough at the topline came with the former Peter Moody prepared galloper Attractable winning the rich Big Dance in 2023.

Following on from that was Matcha Latte’s win in the 2025 Provincial/Midway Championship. He was previously trained by Mark Newnham, prior to his departure to Hong Kong.

Both Attractable and Matcha Latte were also broken in and educated by Sara, adding further merit to her resume.

Sara’s training philosophy is rooted in her background in show jumping and eventing. She places strong emphasis on balance, flatwork, and horsemanship, tailoring each program to suit the individual. Known for her hands-on approach, she rides her own horses and remains closely involved in every stage of their preparation.

Sara was identified by Macedon Racing following an extensive search for a young trainer to drive forward the legacy of Macedon Lodge, a property which has produced no less than six Melbourne Cup winners since its initial development in 2000.

Located just 45 minutes from Melbourne, Sara viewed Macedon Lodge as the ideal property to expand her capacity to produce top line performers.

Sara will continue to operate her existing New South Wales stable at Wyong alongside her new Victorian training base at Macedon Lodge.

Sara will be supported in her expansion into Victoria by existing NSW based staff headed by former Group 1 winning trainer Stephen Farley along with her husband Will Mathew.

Will Mathew is an accomplished showjumping rider and coach who has played a pivotal role in the young stable’s development. William was also a coach at the 2024 Paris Olympics and continues to pursue his own ambitions at the highest level of the sport.

Stephen Farley will continue to play an important role in guiding Ryan’s Wyong team as the stable expands into Victoria. A Group 1-winning trainer in his own right, Farley prepared Sincero to win both the Stradbroke Handicap and George Main Stakes from his former base at Wyong. His experience and knowledge will provide valuable continuity for the NSW operation.

An intuitive horsewoman already with a proven eye for identifying and developing young horses, Sara will also play a central role in identifying new talent from the yearling sales ring, commencing in 2027.

Macedon Lodge is set over 300 acres and features an iconic straight up hill one mile gallop, along with a circular fibre sand track. All told Macedon Lodge boasts some 15km of track and trails. The property also features equine pool, aqua walker, equine spa, treadmills, horse walkers and rehabilitation solarium and comfortable accommodation for up the 120 horses in work.

With an impressive team of highly qualified staff both at Macedon Lodge and Wyong, Sara looks forward to providing existing and new owners expansive training options for their horses, spanning the premier racing states of Victoria and New South Wales.

With feature-race victories already on the board, Sara’s goal as a public trainer is clear: to continue developing sound, confident, and high-performing horses while pursuing further black-type success.
