Prepared by Melbourne Cup‑winning trainers John Symons and Sheila Laxon, the gelding appreciated both the drop in grade and the slightly firmer track conditions than he has recently faced.
Dylan Dunn executed a perfectly measured ride from barrier four, giving Taupo Tiger every opportunity to showcase his staying qualities.
Settling into a smooth rhythm throughout, Taupo Tiger travelled comfortably before lifting when the pressure came in the home straight. He fought tenaciously over the concluding stages to hold off the fast‑finishing I Could Do Better, with Gambu closing into third.
The victory was well‑earned; he was hard fit and just needing a bit of luck. Returning to Benchmark 52 company proved the ideal assignment, and Taupo Tiger rewarded the owners’ and team’s patience with a tough, genuine performance.
